3th International Conference on George Santayana

The Critical Edition of The Letters of George Santayana was completed in July 2008. It has provided, among other relevant things, a great deal of information about Santayna’s life, age, contemporaries, and books he liked. Scholars all over the world can find in Santayana’s letters an exceptionally good road to the man the writer and the thinker.

Taking occasion from this event, LIMBO. BOLETÍN INTERNACIONAL DE ESTUDIOS SOBRE SANTAYANA will publish in 2010 a special issue. To this end, LIMBO welcomes submissions of original papers dealing with any relevant aspect of the philosophy of Santayana, his age or his relations with other thinkers in connection with his letters.

Papers must be griten in English or Spanish, and should not exceed 10/12 pages (about 4.000 words). For the presentation of their manuscripts, authors are requested toadhere to the details that can be found at:

SANTAYANA EN SUS CARTAS

Una vez finalizada la ardua tarea de la edición crítica de las cartas de Santayana, a cargo de la Santayana Edition, se ha puesto a disposición del estudioso de su obra un importante volumen de información, tanto sobre la vida de Santayana, como de su época, de sus contemporáneos, de sus lecturas, entre otros temas de interés. Una magnífica puerta de acceso al Santayana hombre y al Santayana autor.

Por esto la revista LIMBO. BOLETÍN INTERNACIONAL DE ESTUDIOS SOBRE SANTAYANA publicará en 2010 un número dedicado celebrar el fin de la citada edición. Con este motivo, LIMBO invita a proponer para su publicación en la revista artículos originales que, partiendo del epistolario santayaniano, aborden cualquier aspecto relevante de su filosofía o de su relación con su época y contemporáneos.

Los artículos deberán estar escritos en español o inglés y se extensión será de 10/12 páginas (en torno a 4.000 palabras). Se ruega a los autores que, para la presentación de sus trabajos, se ajusten a las normas que pueden encontrar en:

La primera jornada estará dedicada al lugar que Santayana ocupa en el mundo, en especial a su relación con España, Estados Unidos, Europa y Argentina. La segunda abordará la relación de Santayana con la filosofía, en especial con el pragmatismo y con Wittgenstein. La jornada de clausura versará sobre arte, literatura y estética. Se dedicará un espacio a exposición de comunicaciones y para una audición musical y lectura de poemas.

Entre los profesores invitados se encuentran Herman Saatkamp y Manuel Garrido, que abrirán y cerrarán respectivamente el congreso, Pedro García, Krzyzstof Skowroñski, Graziella Fantini, Vicente Cervera, Matt Flamn, John Lachs, Ángel Manuel Faerna, Ramón del Castillo, Vicente Sanfélix, David Dilworth, Cayetano Estébanez, Giuseppe Patella.

Al comienzo del Congreso se entregará un libro con diversos materiales sobre Santayana (Materiales para una utopía: Antología poética y dos textos filosóficos).

Las ponencias se publicarán en formato de libro y las comunicaciones en formato CD.

The first day will be devoted to considering the place Santayana has in the world, particularly to his relation with Spain, the USA, Europe and Argentina. The second will treat Santayana's relation with philosophy, in particular with pragmatism and Wittgenstein. The closing day will deal with art, literature and aesthetics. There will be some time devoted to papers, listening to music and reading poems.

At the beginning of the Conference a book will be distributed dealing with Santayana (Materiales para una utopía: una antología poética y dos textos filosóficos).

Lectures will be published in a book form and papers in a CD.

The Organizing Committee of III International Conference on George Santayana is honored to announce the First Call for this Conference. We invite proposals for presentations from research fields related to any aspect pertinent to the conference title. Possible topics include but should not be limited to aspects of Santayana's life and thought from different perspectives such as pragmatism, aesthetics, literature, or about his geographical and cultural ties.

Please, take note of these important dates:

Deadline for abstracts (no longer than 300 hundred words): June 30th, 2009
Deadline for papers (no longer than 15 pages): July 30th, 2009
Confirmation of acceptance: September 20th, 2009
Deadline for submission of the final version of the paper,

ready for publication: November 30th, 2009
Approximate date for publication: April, 2010

Papers, with original contributions on the philosopher George Santayana, should be prepared in accordance to the following formal guidelines. Papers not conforming to these guidelines will be returned to the authors for revision:
The languages of presentation and publication are English and Spanish. Authors are expected to e-mail one copy of their manuscript, typed double-spaced, with wide margins, on plain, standard A4. Once the paper, between 10 and 15 pages, is finally accepted, an e-mailed copy of the final version will be asked (in Word format, Times New Roman, Size 12). The following information should appear on the first page: full title, author's full name, affiliation, e-mail address, and the abstract of no more than 300 words.

A Scientific Committee will select the papers. After their acceptance by a Scientific Committee, all selected papers will be published in a book (CD format) with ISBN
Papers will not be presented or published unless their authors have previously registered for the Conference.

Authors are required to indicate well in advance if they will not be able to attend the Conference and personally present their papers.

Los temas posibles incluyen, pero no se limitan a, cuestiones relacionadas con la vida y el pensamiento de Santayana desde perspectivas diferentes tales como pragmatismo, estética, literatura o sus vínculos geográficos y culturales.

Las comunicaciones, con aportaciones originales sobre el filósofo Jorge Santayana, se redactarán siguiendo los siguientes criterios formales. Las comunicaciones que no se ajusten a estos criterios serán remitidas a sus autores para su revisión.

Los idiomas de presentación y publicación son el español y el inglés. Los autores enviarán una copia de su manuscrito por correo electrónico, mecanografiado a doble espacio, con márgenes amplios en hojas de tamaño estándar A4. Una vez que el texto, entre 10 y 15 páginas, haya sido aceptado, se solicitará una versión final (en formato Word, Times New Roman, tamaño de letra 12). En la primera página se incluirá la siguiente información: título completo, nombre y apellidos del autor, institución de referencia, dirección de correo electrónico, y un resumen que no supere las 300 palabras.

Un Comité Científico seleccionará las comunicaciones. Todas las comunicaciones seleccionadas serán publicadas en un libro (con formato de CD) con ISBN.
No podrán presentarse ni publicarse las comunicaciones a menos que sus autores se hayan inscrito previamente en el Congreso.
Se solicita a los autores que notifiquen al mismo tiempo que envían la comunicación si no pueden participar presencialmente en el Congreso y presentar personalmente sus aportaciones.
