Translated here for the first time into Italian, George Santayana's The Kingdom of Essence still presents an original and provocative ontological system today. The first piece of a monumental metaphysics composed between 1927 and 1940, as well as a point of confluence of numerous philosophical currents of the time (from the pragmatism of William James to the nascent analytical philosophy of Bertrand Russell), the text explores concepts such as that of Being, of Existence, Matter and Knowledge, presenting a rigorous but innovative analysis of the fundamental concepts of dialectics and philosophy.  A critical edition of a classic work by the renowned philosopher George Santayana evaluating key movements in American intellectual history.

Winds of Doctrine presents six essays by the internationally recognized critic and philosopher George Santayana. The essays, edited by David E. Spiech, Martin A. Coleman, and Faedra Lazar Weiss, and introduced by Paul Forster, address the broad sweep of intellectual trends—or, as the title suggests, the ever-changing winds of thought—of the Spanish-born American thinker's time. The topics range from the secularization of American culture to the rise of religious modernism to the “genteel tradition” in American philosophy, the subject of Santayana's final lecture in America and perhaps his best known essay.

The original Winds of Doctrine, published in 1913, was the first book published after Santayana's 1912 departure for Europe. Santayana had felt stifled at Harvard for some time, and his long-contemplated resignation from academia released him from previous obligations and allowed him a new freedom to think and write. Much later, Santayana remarked on the significance of that choice to step away: “In Winds of Doctrine and my subsequent books, a reader of my earlier writings may notice a certain change of climate. . . . It was not my technical philosophy that was principally affected, but rather the meaning and status of philosophy for my inner man.”

An insightful document of American intellectual history, supplemented with annotations and rich textual commentary, Winds of Doctrine is a vital and engaging survey of the religious, political, philosophical, and literary trends of the twentieth century.

En qué medida es práctico el pensamiento (fragmento)

El fragmento, inédito en español, pertenece al capítulo IX de La razón en el sentido común, libro primero de La vida de la razón, 5 vols. (1905-1906) del filósofo hispano-norteamericano Jorge/George Santayana (Madrid, 1862-Roma, 1953). Santayana aborda aquí la relación entre mente y cerebro desde un naturalismo materialista, que ha asumido por completo la revolución intelectual darwinista, y mostrando ser un fino analista de la experiencia de la acción consciente.

SANTAYANA EN REVISTA DE OCCIDENTE Nº 500 (2023)

Damos a conocer por vez primera al público español un fragmento del

capítulo 4, titulado «Sobre algunos críticos del descubrimiento de los

objetos naturales», de la obra del filósofo hispano-norteamericano George

Santayana La razón en el sentido común (1905), libro primero de su

pentalogía La vida de la razón (1905-1906).

Un texto tan importante había quedado sin traducir. 

La traducción se ofrece ahora en primicia como adelanto de la próxima publicación, en la editorial KRK, del libro completo. 

La impresiones personales de la estancia del joven Santayana en Berlín

durante dos cursos, 1887-1889, donde asistió a las clases de los filósofos

neokantianos Friedrich Paulsen y Hans Vaihinger, pueden conocerse gracias

al reciente descubrimiento de sus cartas desde Berlín a Charles A. Loeser, y

que han sido publicadas por la Universidad de Valencia en edición bilingüe:

Sirvan, para la contextualización filosófica de la interpretación santayaniana
