9. Santayana claims that “Pure spiritual life cannot be something compensatory, a consolation for having missed more solid satisfactions” (PSL). What does Santayana mean by this claim and does the spiritual life offer any sort of moral consolation?
10. Does Santayana’s account of spirit and the spiritual life have any connections to contemporary, popular views of mindfulness or meditation?

Born in Spain, Jorge / George Santayana (1863-1952), a poet, philosopher and professor at Harvard University for twenty years, returns home through the Instituto Cervantes. The occasion cannot be more propitious: to celebrate the critical edition of The Life of Reason, Santayana’s work that has most influenced American naturalism. The panel will include John Lachs (Centennial Professor, University of Vanderbilt), Daniel Moreno (IES Miguel Servet, Spain) and Martin A. Coleman (The Santayana Edition, IUPUI). This panel discussion on Santayana will be moderated by Sean Kelly (Department of Philosophy, Harvard University).

This is the sixteenth grant the Edition has received from the NEH. Please help ensure it is not the last.
