SANTAYANA EN REVISTA DE OCCIDENTE Nº 500 (2023)

 INÉDITO DE SANTAYANA SOBRE KANT

Damos a conocer por vez primera al público español un fragmento del

capítulo 4, titulado «Sobre algunos críticos del descubrimiento de los

objetos naturales», de la obra del filósofo hispano-norteamericano George

Santayana La razón en el sentido común (1905), libro primero de su

pentalogía La vida de la razón (1905-1906).

Un texto tan importante había quedado sin traducir. 

La traducción se ofrece ahora en primicia como adelanto de la próxima publicación, en la editorial KRK, del libro completo. 

La impresiones personales de la estancia del joven Santayana en Berlín

durante dos cursos, 1887-1889, donde asistió a las clases de los filósofos

neokantianos Friedrich Paulsen y Hans Vaihinger, pueden conocerse gracias

al reciente descubrimiento de sus cartas desde Berlín a Charles A. Loeser, y

que han sido publicadas por la Universidad de Valencia en edición bilingüe:

Sirvan, para la contextualización filosófica de la interpretación santayaniana

de Kant, dos libros de Santayana: Ensayos de historia de la

filosofía (Tecnos, 2020) y Ensayos filosóficos (KRK, 2021).

EL INTELECTO NO ESTÁ DE MODA

 

Santayana es algo más, o algo menos, que filósofo, pues la filosofía no bastaba a dar cauce a la riqueza intuitiva de su pensamiento, como atestiguan su voluminosa obra autobiográfica y su estimable labor como poeta. Los ensayos recogidos en este libro pertenecen a una antología de sus textos llevada a cabo por

Logan Pearsall Smith y publicada por vez primera en 1920. Reflejan por tanto el talante de ambos, autor y lector, y aquilatan como ninguna otra antología posible lo que les unía más profundamente pese a ser mucho también lo que los separaba.

Pearsall Smith dice hallar en la copiosa obra de Santayana «numerosos textos semejantes a los de los antiguos ensayistas sobre temas humanos en general [y] de mayor importancia que lo que hallaba en la obra de otros escritores contemporáneos ». Lo que de verdad encuentra, y echa en falta en los autores de su época, es un cierto humanismo de corte clásico. Se piensa, casi sin querer, en Montaigne, cuyo escepticismo, amable y burlón, no dista mucho del de Santayana, que afirmó que había tratado de decir

la mayor cantidad posible de cosas no inglesas en lengua inglesa.

La fe crédula en la evolución y el deseo de una vida intensa son característicos de la sensibilidad

contemporánea, pero no parecen coherentes con el desprecio del intelecto, no menos característico de estos tiempos. La inteligencia humana es, sin duda, fruto de la evolución, un fruto tardío y altamente desarrollado, tan digno de admiración, al parecer, como los ojos de los moluscos o las antenas de las hormigas. Y si la vida es mejor cuanto más intensa y concentrada, la inteligencia sería, en tal caso, la mejor forma de vida. Sin embargo, esta época se encuentra tan incómoda con

su grado de inteligencia que le basta con algo menos vital y añora lo que la evolución ha dejado atrás.

Santayana’s political ideas, as contained in Dominations and Powers and dispersed throughout his other works, have not been given the attention they deserve. This is the first comprehensive study of Santayana’s political hermeneutics as embedded in his general philosophy and intimately connected to his cultural criticism. Managing necessity and harmonizing diversity, negative anthropology, an Apollonian individualism and naturalistic humanism, are only a few of the interpretative categories used to elucidate the dense, ambiguous and ironic ruminations of Santayana and reveal their timeliness. Discussion of other thinkers—from Plato to Ricoeur—brings to light the essentially dialogical character of his work

"The concerted efforts of three respected Santayana scholars have coalesced in this book that includes the transcription of the philosopher’s letters to Charles A. Loeser and to Albert von Westenholz. Daniel Pinkas discovered and analyzed them only recently and they are published here for the first time, in English and Spanish, translated by Daniel Moreno and presented by José Beltrán. The volume comprises the letters Santayana sent to his two friends over five long decades, spanning the nineteenth and twentieth century. This collection of epistolary writings constitutes a surprising mosaic-like jewel made up of a constellation of life episodes that pulsate in each and every letter and resonate suggestively in the echo-chamber of Santayana’s body of work".
